Mineral profile differences

Evian has more total minerals (345 mg/L of fixed residue) than FIJI (220 mg/L), but neither comes close to a medium-mineralization water. Both sit comfortably in the low-mineralization range. The biggest contrast is in the calcium-magnesium profile: Evian provides 80 mg/L of calcium and 26 mg/L of magnesium, FIJI just 18 mg/L and 14 mg/L respectively.

Sodium reverses that pattern. Evian carries only 6.5 mg/L of sodium - well within low-sodium territory - while FIJI is at 16 mg/L. The reason is geological: FIJI's source is volcanic and naturally carries silica and trace minerals that include more sodium. Bicarbonate is also higher in Evian (360 mg/L) than in FIJI (125 mg/L), which contributes to a slightly different mouthfeel.

Taste and use cases

Evian has the recognisable, mildly mineral taste of an Alpine glacial water - soft, with just enough structure from calcium and bicarbonate to give it presence on the palate without ever feeling heavy. The finish is clean and slightly sweet, which is why it has long been positioned as a daily premium still water.

FIJI is unmistakably softer and silkier, a signature attributable to its high silica content. Calcium and bicarbonate are both lower, so the water feels lighter and almost rounded, with very little mineral edge. It works well as a stand-alone still water and is often chosen at the table when a neutral, low-character water is preferred over one that asserts itself.

Which one to choose if…

  • •

You're watching sodium intake → Evian wins clearly here at 6.5 mg/L versus FIJI's 16 mg/L. Both are still acceptable for low-sodium intake, but Evian is significantly lower.

  • •

You want more calcium and magnesium → Evian delivers 80 mg/L of calcium and 26 mg/L of magnesium, both notably higher than FIJI (18 mg/L and 14 mg/L). Useful if your diet is low in these minerals.

  • •

You prefer a soft, silky mouthfeel → FIJI's high silica content and lower mineralization give it a distinctive silky finish that many drinkers find smoother than Evian.

  • •

You want a versatile food water → Evian's slightly more structured profile pairs well with most cuisines; FIJI's neutral character works better when you want the food to lead.

FAQ

Is Evian healthier than Fiji?

Neither is healthier in absolute terms. Evian contributes more calcium and magnesium and less sodium per litre. FIJI contributes more sodium but offers a distinctive silica-rich softness. Both are safe for everyday consumption and meet bottled-water regulations in their export markets.

Which has more sodium, Evian or Fiji?

FIJI contains 16 mg/L of sodium, more than twice Evian's 6.5 mg/L. The difference comes from FIJI's volcanic source, which naturally carries more sodium and silica than Evian's Alpine glacial source.

Are Evian and Fiji from the same kind of source?

No. Evian comes from snowmelt that has filtered for years through Alpine glacial rock near Évian-les-Bains in the French Alps. FIJI is drawn from an artesian aquifer in the Yaqara Valley on Viti Levu, the largest island of the Fiji archipelago, where the rock is volcanic.

Which is better for everyday hydration?

Both are perfectly suitable. Evian is a more traditional choice if you want a small contribution of calcium and magnesium with very low sodium. FIJI is preferred by drinkers who value its silky mouthfeel over mineral content.

Which is more popular internationally?

Both are global brands. Evian has the longer commercial history and remains one of the most distributed bottled waters in Europe and North America. FIJI built its presence largely in the United States and Asia, where it is strongly associated with the premium-still segment.
