Mineral profile differences

Both waters come from the Eastern Carpathians, but the geology around their respective sources produces different fingerprints on the label. Aqua Carpatica Plată sits at 166 mg/L of fixed residue, while Borsec Plată is at 283 mg/L - almost twice as concentrated. Both remain firmly in the low-mineralization band (under 500 mg/L).

The most striking gap is magnesium: Borsec carries 31.4 mg/L versus Aqua Carpatica's 13.1 mg/L. Calcium is also higher in Borsec (55.3 vs 43.9 mg/L), as is bicarbonate (301 vs 180 mg/L). Sodium is very low in both, but Aqua Carpatica is exceptional at just 0.7 mg/L - among the lowest-sodium mineral waters in Europe - while Borsec sits at 2.4 mg/L, still very low by any standard.

Taste and use cases

Aqua Carpatica's very low mineralization and almost zero sodium give it an exceptionally clean, neutral taste. There is no mineral aftertaste and very little body, which makes it a natural choice as a daily water that disappears behind whatever you eat or drink. It's frequently picked for infants and for low-sodium diets for the same reason.

Borsec has more presence on the palate. The higher calcium and magnesium add a subtle structure and a faint mineral character, while the higher bicarbonate gives it a smoother, slightly rounder finish. It is one of Romania's oldest and most recognised water brands, traditionally served at the table and well suited to richer or saltier dishes.

Which one to choose if…

  • •

You're watching sodium intake → Aqua Carpatica is exceptional, at 0.7 mg/L. Borsec is also very low (2.4 mg/L); both are far below any low-sodium threshold.

  • •

You want more magnesium and calcium → Borsec delivers more magnesium (31.4 vs 13.1 mg/L) and more calcium (55.3 vs 43.9 mg/L), making it a more meaningful daily contribution.

  • •

You prefer a clean, neutral taste → Aqua Carpatica's near-zero sodium and very low mineralization make it among the cleanest-tasting waters on the Romanian market.

  • •

You're pairing with food → Borsec's slightly heavier mineral profile holds up better with traditional Romanian cuisine; Aqua Carpatica is the safer pick with delicate flavours.

FAQ

Is Aqua Carpatica healthier than Borsec?

Neither is healthier in absolute terms; they offer different mineral contributions. Aqua Carpatica is a leader in low-sodium and very low mineralization, which suits sodium-restricted diets and infants. Borsec provides more magnesium and calcium per litre, which can be a useful daily contribution.

Which has more sodium, Aqua Carpatica or Borsec?

Borsec has slightly more sodium (2.4 mg/L) than Aqua Carpatica (0.7 mg/L). Both are extremely low and well within the strict EU low-sodium threshold of 20 mg/L.

Are Aqua Carpatica and Borsec from the same source?

Both are bottled in the Eastern Carpathians, but from different sources. Aqua Carpatica's still water comes from the Vatra Dornei area, while Borsec is bottled from the historic springs of Borsec, in Harghita County. The geological context produces the differences you see on the labels.

Which is better for everyday hydration?

Both are very suitable for daily hydration. Aqua Carpatica is the more neutral choice, often preferred for its very low sodium and clean taste. Borsec contributes more magnesium and calcium, useful if your diet is otherwise low in those minerals.

Which water is more popular in Romania?

Both are top-tier Romanian brands. Borsec has the longer history and is one of the most traditional names in Romanian mineral water. Aqua Carpatica has built strong recognition more recently, particularly thanks to its very low sodium and natural nitrate-free profile.
