EU label: A natural mineral water may carry the indication “contains magnesium” when magnesium exceeds 50 mg/L. 2 of the Top 10 above exceed this threshold. Directive 2009/54/EC ↗

The bigger picture

Magnesium is only one part of the profile.

For example, two magnesium-rich waters may have very different sodium levels, something worth checking if you're trying to limit salt. Calcium, bicarbonate and your everyday habits matter too.

The proof

Similar magnesium. Very different mineral profiles.

These three waters differ by only about 3 mg/L of magnesium. The rest of the profile tells a very different story.

Magnesium differs by only about 3 mg/L. Yet calcium varies more than threefold and sodium almost fifteenfold.

Magnesium in Italian Mineral Water

Magnesium levels in Italian mineral waters reflect the country’s varied geology. Waters from dolomitic, carbonate and other mineral-rich formations can accumulate substantially more magnesium than lighter alpine sources, which helps explain the wide spread of values in the Italian ranking.

Many of the waters near the top of the ranking also contain substantial calcium and have relatively high overall mineralization, so magnesium should be considered together with the rest of the mineral profile rather than in isolation.

FAQ

Which water brands have the most magnesium in Italy?

Fonte Essenziale (102 mg/L), Courmayeur (58.9 mg/L) and San Pellegrino (49.6 mg/L) lead the Italian ranking. Values come from the official labels; the top 10 in the h2oMatch database is shown in the table above.

Which water is rich in both magnesium and calcium?

Fonte Essenziale (102 mg/L magnesium, 593 mg/L calcium) and Courmayeur (58.9 mg/L and 549 mg/L) top both rankings. The calcium ranking is on the page dedicated to high-calcium waters.

When may a natural mineral water be labelled as containing magnesium?

Under EU natural mineral water rules, the indication ‘contains magnesium’ may be used when magnesium exceeds 50 mg/L. In this Italian top 10, Fonte Essenziale and Courmayeur are above that threshold.

What does magnesium-rich water taste like?

At higher concentrations, magnesium gives water a slightly bitter note: it's one of the reasons highly mineralised waters have a more assertive character than lightly mineralised ones.

How much magnesium can mineral water contribute to daily intake?

One litre of Fonte Essenziale contains 102 mg of magnesium, roughly a third of EFSA's Adequate Intake for adults (300 mg/day for women and 350 mg/day for men). Studies suggest that around half the magnesium in mineral water can be absorbed, although the proportion varies. Mineral water can therefore make a useful, calorie-free contribution to daily magnesium intake.

All values are based on official mineral water labels and the h2oMatch database.
