Mineral Water with High Magnesium in Germany: Top 10 Compared

Among the mineral waters available in Germany in the h2oMatch database, these have the highest magnesium values.

Mineral waters with the most magnesium in Germany - Top 10 by magnesium content

The ten mineral waters available in Germany with the highest magnesium values in the h2oMatch database, based on official label data.

Magnesium content differs widely between German mineral waters because it depends on the rock the water passes through, such as dolomite or volcanic layers. Calcium is shown for context.

EU label: A natural mineral water may carry the indication “contains magnesium” when magnesium exceeds 50 mg/L. 6 of the Top 10 above exceed this threshold. Directive 2009/54/EC ↗

The bigger picture

The highest-magnesium water may not be your best match.

A litre of a magnesium-rich water can make a noticeable contribution to dietary magnesium intake, alongside food, which remains the main source.

But magnesium alone does not decide which water suits you. Waters with similar magnesium can differ greatly in sodium, calcium and bicarbonate, and your habits and taste preferences matter too.

The proof

Similar magnesium. Very different mineral profiles.

These three waters all contain between 101 and 120 mg/L of magnesium. The rest of the profile tells a very different story.

Magnesium differs by less than 20 mg/L. Yet calcium varies almost fourfold and sodium more than fivefold.

Magnesium in German Mineral Water

Germany's high-magnesium mineral waters are primarily sourced from volcanic and heavily stratified geological regions, particularly in the Eifel volcanic zone in western Germany and parts of Bavaria and Hesse. These geological layers - formed from ancient volcanic activity and marine sedimentary deposits - are naturally rich in dolomite and other magnesium-bearing minerals.

German mineral water law (Mineral- und Tafelwasserverordnung) requires complete mineral disclosure on all labels, making it easy to compare magnesium content across brands. Waters from volcanic regions like Apollinaris spring (Ahr Valley) can contain 80-130 mg/L of magnesium alongside very high bicarbonate levels.

Several waters near the top of the German magnesium ranking are lightly sparkling, but the list also includes still options such as Residenz Quelle, Staatl. Fachingen, Ensinger NaturQuell and EiszeitQuell. Carbonation is independent of magnesium content, so check the specific variant when comparing waters.

FAQ

Which mineral water brands have the most magnesium in Germany?

Apollinaris (120 mg/L), Gerolsteiner (108 mg/L) and Rosbacher (101 mg/L) lead the German ranking. Values come from the official labels; the top 10 in the h2oMatch database is shown in the table above.

Which water offers magnesium and calcium at once?

Gerolsteiner (108 mg/L magnesium, 348 mg/L calcium) and Rosbacher (101 mg/L and 224 mg/L) rank high in both lists. You'll find the calcium top 10 on the page dedicated to high-calcium waters.

When may a water carry the indication 'contains magnesium'?

Under the EU regulation, from a magnesium content above 50 mg/L. In the German top 10, the first six waters clear this threshold.

How much magnesium can mineral water contribute to daily requirements?

One litre of Apollinaris contains 120 mg of magnesium - against an adult reference value of around 300 to 350 mg per day (EFSA), a magnesium-rich water can therefore make a noticeable contribution. It doesn't replace a balanced diet, but it complements it with no calories.

All values are based on official mineral water labels and the h2oMatch database.
