Low-sodium mineral waters in Italy - top 10 by sodium content
The 10 mineral waters available in Italy with the lowest sodium content in the h2oMatch database. Sorted by sodium ascending; where sodium is equal, the water with the lower fixed residue comes first.
Fixed residue is shown for context; it indicates overall mineralisation.

EU label: A natural mineral water may carry the indication “suitable for a low-sodium diet” when sodium is below 20 mg/L. 10 of the Top 10 above meet this threshold. Directive 2009/54/EC ↗
The bigger picture
The lowest-sodium water may not be your best match.
For example, if you're looking for more calcium in your water, Courmayeur offers far more than Lauretana, despite having almost the same sodium content. Your overall mineral needs and preferences matter too.
The proof
Nearly identical sodium. Very different mineral profiles.
All three waters contain between 0.7 and 0.9 mg/L of sodium, yet their overall mineral composition is dramatically different.
| Lauretana | S. Bernardo Naturale | Courmayeur | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sodium | 0.9 mg/L | 0.8 mg/L | 0.7 mg/L |
| Calcium | 1 mg/L | 10.8 mg/L | 549 mg/L |
| Magnesium | 0.4 mg/L | 0.4 mg/L | 58.9 mg/L |
| Fixed residue | 14 mg/L | 35 mg/L | 2058 mg/L |
Their sodium differs by just 0.2 mg/L, while calcium, magnesium and fixed residue each vary more than 100-fold.

Sodium in Italian Mineral Water
Italy's diverse geology, from the Alps to the limestone and dolomite formations of the Apennines, produces mineral waters with different sodium concentrations. As groundwater travels through rock layers, it dissolves minerals along the way. The final composition depends on the geological characteristics of each source.
Most dietary sodium comes from food, particularly processed foods and added salt. However, sodium levels in mineral water can vary considerably. Two litres of Lauretana (0.9 mg/L) provide just 1.8 mg of sodium, compared with 128 mg from two litres of Uliveto (64 mg/L). Even the latter is modest compared with the WHO recommendation of less than 2.000 mg of sodium per day for adults. Under EU rules, natural mineral waters containing less than 20 mg/L sodium can be labelled ‘suitable for a low-sodium diet’.
Within this Top 10, the difference between 0.2 and 1.5 mg/L sodium is negligible for most people. Even drinking two litres daily, the difference is only 2.6 mg. Rather than focusing exclusively on the lowest sodium value, it can be more useful to consider calcium, magnesium, other minerals and personal taste preferences.

FAQ
Which mineral waters have the least sodium in Italy?
Dolomia (0.2 mg/L), Acqua Eva (0.3 mg/L), Courmayeur (0.7 mg/L) and S. Bernardo (0.8 mg/L) have the lowest values in the h2oMatch database, according to the official labels. The top 10 is shown in the table above.
Is there a mineral water with no sodium at all?
No, every natural mineral water contains at least traces of sodium. For example, Italy's lowest are Dolomia at 0.2 mg/L and Acqua Eva at 0.3 mg/L.
Does low sodium mean a light water?
No, they are independent values. Courmayeur and Lauretana have almost the same sodium (0.7 mg/L and 0.9 mg/L), but opposite profiles: 2058 versus 14 mg/L of fixed residue. A water can be highly mineralised and, at the same time, almost sodium-free.
When is a water suitable for low-sodium diets?
EU regulation allows this label claim when sodium is below 20 mg/L. Every water in the Italian top 10 falls well within this criterion.
How much sodium do you get from two litres of low-sodium water?
Two litres of Acqua Eva provide 0.6 mg of sodium, compared with the WHO recommendation of less than 2000 mg per day.
All values are based on official mineral water labels and the h2oMatch database.
