EU label: A natural mineral water may carry the indication “contains calcium” when calcium exceeds 150 mg/L. 7 of the Top 10 above exceed this threshold. Directive 2009/54/EC ↗

The bigger picture

The highest-calcium water may not be your best match.

Calcium is only one part of the profile. Magnesium, sodium, bicarbonate and your own preferences and habits can change the picture.

The proof

Similar calcium. Very different mineral profiles.

These three waters differ by only about 20 mg/L of calcium. The rest of the profile tells a very different story.

Calcium in Italian Mineral Water

Italian geology runs from the granite Alps of the north to the limestone and dolomitic formations of the Apennines. This diversity helps create mineral waters with very different profiles: from very light waters to calcium-rich sources such as Fonte Essenziale and Courmayeur, both above 500 mg/L.

The value expressed in mg/L shows how many milligrams of calcium are present in a litre of water. A litre of Ferrarelle, for example, contains 400 mg of calcium. This amount is the calcium present in the water, not the amount the body actually absorbs. In adults, on average around 25-30% of ingested calcium is absorbed, although the percentage varies with the amount taken, age, vitamin D status and other individual factors.

The calcium present in mineral water is bioavailable. Clinical studies indicate that its absorption can be comparable to that of calcium from milk, making calcium-rich waters a possible additional dietary source of this mineral. In particularly calcium-rich waters, such as Fonte Essenziale or Courmayeur, the contribution to total daily calcium intake can be significant.

FAQ

Which mineral waters have the most calcium in Italy?

At the top of the ranking are Fonte Essenziale (593 mg/L), Courmayeur (549 mg/L) and Ferrarelle (400 mg/L). Values come from the official labels; the top 10 in the h2oMatch database is shown in the table above.

Which water is rich in both calcium and magnesium?

Fonte Essenziale (593 mg/L calcium, 102 mg/L magnesium) and Courmayeur (549 mg/L and 58.9 mg/L) sit at the top of both Italian rankings. You can compare the magnesium ranking on the page dedicated to high-magnesium waters.

When can a water be called "calcic"?

Under the EU regulation on natural mineral waters, the indication ‘contains calcium’ may be used when calcium exceeds 150 mg/L. In the Italian top 10, the first seven waters clear this threshold.

Is the calcium in mineral water actually absorbed by the body?

Yes. Calcium from mineral water is bioavailable and can contribute to overall dietary calcium intake.

Which high-calcium water is also low in sodium?

Courmayeur is the most notable case: 549 mg/L of calcium with just 0.7 mg/L of sodium. Lete (300 mg/L calcium, 5.1 mg/L sodium) and Fonte Essenziale (593 mg/L and 14 mg/L) also stay below the EU threshold of 20 mg/L for low-sodium diets.

All values are based on official mineral water labels and the h2oMatch database.
