EU label: A natural mineral water may carry the indication “contains calcium” when calcium exceeds 150 mg/L. 5 of the Top 10 above exceed this threshold. Directive 2009/54/EC ↗
The bigger picture
The highest-calcium water may not be your best match.
Calcium is only one part of the profile. Magnesium, sodium, bicarbonate and your own preferences and habits can change the picture.
The proof
Almost the same calcium. Very different water.
These three waters differ by just 5 mg/L of calcium. The rest of the profile tells a very different story.
| Staatl. Fachingen | Ensinger NaturQuell | Märkisch Kristall | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calcium | 99 mg/L | 95 mg/L | 94 mg/L |
| Magnesium | 59 mg/L | 48 mg/L | 10.4 mg/L |
| Sodium | 564 mg/L | 10.6 mg/L | 29 mg/L |
| Bicarbonate | 1846 mg/L | 417 mg/L | 370 mg/L |
| Total mineralization | 2800 mg/L | 702 mg/L | 561 mg/L |
Calcium differs by only 5 mg/L. Yet magnesium varies almost sixfold and sodium more than fiftyfold.

Calcium in German mineral waters
Germany’s geology includes volcanic regions such as the Eifel as well as limestone- and dolomite-rich formations in other parts of the country. This geological diversity helps create mineral waters with very different mineral profiles - from relatively light waters to calcium-rich sources such as Residenz Quelle and Gerolsteiner.
The value shown in mg/L indicates how many milligrams of calcium are present in one litre of water. One litre of Franken Brunnen, for example, contains 285 mg of calcium. This describes the amount of calcium present in the water, not the amount the body actually absorbs. In adults, around 25–30% of ingested calcium is absorbed on average, although the proportion varies with the amount consumed, age, vitamin D status and other individual factors.
The calcium present in mineral water is bioavailable. Clinical studies indicate that its absorption can be comparable to that of calcium from milk, so calcium-rich mineral waters can make an additional contribution to daily calcium intake. With particularly calcium-rich waters such as Residenz Quelle or Gerolsteiner, that contribution can be meaningful.

FAQ
Which mineral waters available in Germany combine high calcium and high magnesium?
Gerolsteiner combines 348 mg/L calcium with 108 mg/L magnesium, while Rosbacher contains 224 mg/L calcium and 101 mg/L magnesium. Both rank highly for the two minerals in the h2oMatch database.
Do waters with similar calcium levels always have a similar mineral profile?
No, they do not. For example, Staatl. Fachingen, Ensinger NaturQuell and Märkisch Kristall have almost identical calcium levels (between 94 and 99 mg/L), yet differ strongly in other minerals, like magnesium, sodium, bicarbonate and total mineralization.
How much calcium can mineral water contribute to daily intake?
One litre of Residenz Quelle contains 503 mg of calcium. For context, EFSA sets a population reference intake of 950 mg/day for adults aged 25 and over and 1000 mg/day for adults aged 18 to 24. Calcium from mineral water is bioavailable; in healthy adults, calcium absorption from the diet is typically around 25–30%, although it varies with dose and individual factors, and it contributes alongside calcium from the rest of the diet.
Which still mineral waters in Germany are high in calcium?
Among still waters in the h2oMatch database, Residenz Quelle Naturelle contains 503 mg/L calcium, Rosbacher Naturell 158 mg/L and EiszeitQuell Naturelle 135 mg/L. Mineral values can differ between the still, medium and sparkling versions sold under the same brand, so select the exact carbonation level in h2oMatch rather than relying on the brand name alone.
All values are based on official mineral water labels and the h2oMatch database.
