Low-Sodium Mineral Water in Germany: Top 10 Compared
Among the mineral waters available in Germany in the h2oMatch database, these have the lowest sodium values.
Low-sodium mineral waters in Germany - top 10 by sodium content
The 10 mineral waters available in Germany with the lowest sodium content, based on official labels. Sorted by sodium ascending; where sodium is equal, the water with the lower total mineralization comes first.
Some people prefer lower-sodium water, for example when they have been advised to watch their salt intake. Total mineralization is shown for context; it indicates overall mineralisation.

EU label: A natural mineral water may carry the indication “suitable for a low-sodium diet” when sodium is below 20 mg/L. 10 of the Top 10 above meet this criterion. It describes the water, not a recommendation for everyone to reduce sodium. Directive 2009/54/EC ↗
The bigger picture
The lowest-sodium water may not be your best match.
Waters with almost the same low sodium can have very different calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate levels. If you also want more calcium or magnesium, the lowest-sodium water may not be the right one.
Food usually contributes far more sodium than drinking water, so a water with more sodium is not unhealthy in itself. What matters is your overall diet and preferences.
The proof
Almost the same sodium. Very different mineral profiles.
These three waters all contain less than 3 mg/L of sodium, yet their overall mineral composition is very different.
| Black Forest | Abenstaler Quelle | RhönSprudel | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sodium | 1.1 mg/L | 2.8 mg/L | 2.9 mg/L |
| Calcium | 6.7 mg/L | 56 mg/L | 41.7 mg/L |
| Magnesium | 2.6 mg/L | 25 mg/L | 20.9 mg/L |
| Bicarbonate | 30.5 mg/L | 294 mg/L | 226 mg/L |
| Total mineralization | 46 mg/L | 419 mg/L | 325 mg/L |
Sodium differs by less than 2 mg/L. Yet calcium varies more than eightfold, and magnesium and bicarbonate almost tenfold.

Sodium in German Mineral Water
Germany regulates mineral water under the Mineral- und Tafelwasserverordnung, which aligns with EU Directive 2009/54/EC. All sodium content must be disclosed on labels.
The sodium content of German mineral waters reflects the geology of their source. Waters from the Black Forest and Bavarian Alps tend to be naturally lower in sodium due to the crystalline, low-mineral rock they pass through. Waters from more volcanic regions - such as the Eifel - tend to have higher mineral concentrations overall, including sodium.
For comparison, tap water in major German cities typically contains 10-30 mg/L of sodium, meaning many German mineral waters are equivalent to or lower than tap water in sodium content.
Low sodium doesn't mean low overall mineral content: EiszeitQuell and Black Forest both have very little sodium, but very different mineral profiles - 732 vs 46 mg/L total mineralization.

FAQ
Which mineral water has the least sodium in Germany?
Black Forest leads with 1.1 mg/L, followed by Abenstaler Quelle (2.8 mg/L) and RhönSprudel (2.9 mg/L). Values come from the official labels; the top 10 in the h2oMatch database is shown in the table above.
When is a mineral water considered low in sodium?
Under the EU regulation, a water can be labelled "suitable for a low-sodium diet" when it contains less than 20 mg/L of sodium. Every water in the top 10 sits well below that - even familiar brands such as Gerolsteiner Naturelle (17 mg/L) meet the criterion, though the gap to the top of the ranking is large.
Does low sodium mean few minerals?
No, the values are independent: EiszeitQuell and Black Forest both have very little sodium (6.9 mg/L and 1.1 mg/L), but very different mineral profiles - 732 versus 46 mg/L of total mineralization.
Does carbonated water have more sodium than still water?
The carbonation itself adds no sodium. But be careful: some brands bottle different sources for different variants - Gerolsteiner Naturelle contains 17 mg/L of sodium, while Gerolsteiner Sprudel contains 118 mg/L. What matters is always the label of the specific variant.
All values are based on official mineral water labels and the h2oMatch database.
